Greenlane Reservior Late Summer Topwater Bass 2011 - 8.20.11

Had the opportunity to get down to Greenlane for the first of the year.
I really was expecting a overly hot and un-fishable day and did not expect to have much chance. This attitude probably made me skip out fishing it the entire summer. Well, I was wrong as we were greeted by some beautiful fog on the water even at 8AM.

The operation at the park has been "privatized" this year and terms and pricing are a bit different. They open at 8AM (no more 6am or sunrise swinging gates). However, they said they plan to stay open 1 week after the labor day holiday this year which is 1 week longer then previous years.

With me were two buddies: Jie & Liwen. They are both now out-of-towners but managed to make their way down to fish this particular Saturday. Thanks for coming out. It's fun to be together since we have all fished together before. As you know Greenlane is all a bout accuracy casting and all three of us have the experience now.

I took honors to guide the boat as we made way to our spots. This trip was "topwater only". So lures included spooks, prop baits, magnum bud's, lelure creepers, & dead or alive swimbaits. All was good and although we didnt slam em we had fun. I did lose a nice 20 inch plus bass due to being rusty. I ended up watching her fight instead of fight all the way boat-side.

Another cool thing was that I had some inspiration to blog that day. I want to thank the guys and gals reading this humble blog because on more then a few accounts I've been able to meet strangers that had recognized me or decided to come up to me to say hello or ask "don't you write that blog?" Well as we pulled up that day and unloaded the gear two fellow anglers came up and did just that. It's an awesome experience to share fishing ideas and talk about the blog, videos, and fun on the water. I thanked them for being so genuine and we were on to the water!

As it happens to be one guy gets a skunk. Poor Li, as he had to demonstrate non-catching skills today. Should have gave him the motor work. :D

Fluke On The Gail Frances - Frances Fleet Jigging Report 8.22.11

An awesome day on the Gail Frances where it was all about getting on the water. Those that repeatedly checked the weather didn't show up and that left a lot of room at the rail for the 15 that showed up.

I made the trip up because I knew that these fish wouldn't be here forever and I was rewarded with hooking up 24 fluke and keeping my limit of 7. The hot tip was the Berkeley GULP. I used the Chartreuse 4' mullet. 6 seabass also fell to the inchiku jig and a fluke bucktail. I kept 4 for the table.

Interestingly enough there were anglers that traveled to fish as well. They had the inside track on what was biting and I learned alot from one guy name Sean. He is an experienced Northeast fisherman and I did pick up some technique from him. It's always great to fish next to the guy who is high hook. Anyhow, I watched him pull up a double header with one fluke pushing 6lbs on the same drift I lost a "big one" as well. Mental error as I tried to lift the fish over the rail. He took 1/3 the pool money in a three way tie.

The Gail Grances departed at 7:00am and only a handful of anglers were there by 6am. I arrived around 6:20am, paid the fare and got in on the pool. The fleet consist of three larger vessels, the Gail Frances is the main fluke boat. We got back to the dock a bit after 4pm (4:17pm).

This is a setup I've become fond of using. I've created alot of confidence with it and have no doubt the rod can handle big fish. I caught a 17lb bluefish with it and with the exact same setup seen here. The Shimano Sustain was on it's first trip out after being sent back to Shimano to service. Also for the first time out was is the GPA Custom EVA handle knob. Worked well and was better then the stock rubber t-paddle handle that I had smoothed out after countless trips on the water. Very nice piece in dark blue EVA grip material.

This jig I built so much confidence in during the winter of 2010 jigging for seabass on the 18 hour trips that I decided to bring it along. At a bit under 7 ounces it drops quick to the bottom even with a fast drift.

This setup got it's first time use on the water. I choose the Trinidad 10a over the older Daiwa Saltiga 15 because of the more efficient and smooth drag. Also, it is a bit smaller is makes jigging all day easier. At first I was concerned that the gear ratio (6.3:1) was a bit too fast, however after fighting many fish today I don't have enough good things to say about it. The ratio was perfect. I used #50 FIN-S braided spectra. The rod is a G.Loomis Hot Shot. Again, first time out and although I originally purchased it for plugging lures to stripers, it held up well jigging fluke with bucktails. The tip is soft and extra fast. Multi-use rod's fit the bill right? I mean the rod was originally designed to troll for Salmon. There is some hearty backbone in this rod. Speaking of rods, I did get to feel out a particular custom built rod that Sean was using. I really like shorter length rods for jigging and I will have to look into his setup more. He mentioned it was a Seeker Hercules Inshore Lite. Very nice and American too.

My greedy setup with lots of GULP usage. I witnessed a white 6" Pogy GULP catch 5 and 6lb fluke on this trip too. Next time I will find the biggest GULP to try. Pure cheating at its best.

Squid / GULP & "Killies" combo was the hot ticket. Here is the first fluke I jigged up with the Cape May tackle 5oz. Jig-a-fluke lure.

This Seabass fell to a CM bucktail as well. I did at have on two drifts 3 fish in a row with the Shimano Bottom Ship 200g inchiku jig. It was a lot of fun to jig them up although the wind and drift was blazing around 1.5-2knots. Tough conditions but the weather laid down after the morning bite.

Beautiful head-shaking/fighting to the surface seabass. Ranging from 19-23 inches

We did have to work for them on 2 or 3 drifts but it was well worth it. Fluke and Seabass on the Gail Frances fishing Rhode Island. I cannot wait to get back up there again.

Some have asked why I bring empty bottles on board (or why I rummage through the trash bins on the way back to the dock), and my madness is to take home some sea water. I fill them up and when I'm back home I fill the ziploc plastic bags with them so the fillets freeze better. A little trick I picked up alongside my red bucket technique. :D

SUCCESS !!! True harvest. A great American fishery.

I fished local sandy bottom spot I knew of since last fall and took home 2 more fluke the next morning. Connecticut does have some nice fishing holes if you know where to look.
Couldn't limit out like the day before but 2 (3 is the CT limit) is better then none. Fish were taken on Tidal Tails 1/2oz white bucktails.

In preparation for the trip I decided to limit the amount of gear used and brought along this time around. Less is more and more is better right?

Van Staal VM150 Spinning Reel Review ...an ongoing report

My VM-150 stood the test of 4 trips:

18 Hour Seabass - NJ
This reel shared duty during my last offshore jigging trip in the winter of 2010/2011.

The Atlantic Star was it's first conquest out into the deep blue. It's job was to crank 5lb Black Seabass from 300 feet depths.

#50 Amberjack - NC
April, 2011 I put the reel through it's paces with screaming 100 yard drag runs, and re-runs from Amberjack. Although again the reel shared duties it does the job for mid sized AJ's and I was told would make an excellent Grouper/Snapper reel.

The other two trips out I plugged off the beach. The reel has never felt under-gunned.

The only thing I wish it could have is more capacity so I can put enough PE5-6 or #60 Jerry Brown on it so I can max out the drag when jigging for pelagics. I guess I cannot wish this reel to be a larger VM -250 (please... we have all wanted for so long :p)
The drag is smooth, but that is expected from a reel in this class. I do like the handle after all this use. There is a definite Van Staal "cranking-power" with the VM. It will continue to test it through this fall. Hopefully the extra spools become available as well.

*********NOTE*********
I did notice that the hex screws on the main body were loosened up after the last trip. I took a tool to is and actually made 1 complete turn on most 2 out of 4 screws...

More test to come as I am jigging Nantucket in the near future. I will report on the continued usage. :D

Aki-san taught me to take these reels apart and re-arrange them to be what they should not be. For this I blame him for everything. However, this fisho never knew that I would actually appreciate the once long forgotten game of early 50's and 60's topwater bass game.

For this, I introduce the Abu Ambassadeur 5500DA model. This is the direct drive reel with a drag plate. Many Japanese anglers love this technique. Mamoru san of Matagi (Osaka, Jp) is a big fan and collector of these reels. We both agree on one thing: Ambassadeur + Fenwick + Featherweight Champion Handle !

Fishing in for Canadians - First cast for Pike

Elusive to me are the Canadian pike. To me they are picky, arrogant, skinny fish that will pick a fisho apart with the need for the right presentation on topwater. Seems like a spinner bait can catch them without hesitation but as you know, my topwater (lackthereof) skills leave me with an unheralded strategy to target them.

Anyhow, Preliminary lures for the monsters I thought would work were:

Heddon Super Spook, Some useless tail prop lure from BassPro shops, and the Daiwa Dead of Alive swimbait.

0 for 2.... June was a tough month for me.

The moment I took off to go jigging for Amberjack the weather took a turn that limited us to a good 5-6 hours one day and a canceled trip for our 2nd schedule day out. As mother nature plays her role, I'm thankful just to get out and on the water with a good group of guys. I'd like to take the time to thank both Aki and Christian for their generosity in supplying me with jigs, hooks, rings, plugs, swimbaits, a Shimano T-bar handle (which was used on the Saragosa 10k) and a whole lot of MOJO! Thanks guys, I hope I can make yall proud.

Foremost I want to say that it was great to meet many of the guys from 360tuna.com for the first time and getting on the water with some great spirited fishermen. I know it’s not easy to fish with me sometimes (as Ty knows my on water antics) but I really think we have a good group here :D
As I was lugging my gear into the hotel that Saturday morning I realized that a lot of us had made some sacrifices to get to Wilmington and I wasn’t alone when it came to balancing life’s game and affording the opportunity to get on the water.
I heard Frenchi’s voice on speakerphone around 1:30am while cruising on I-95 South and I knew we would be having a good time based on the enthusiasm in his voice.
I had the chance to finally meet the captain Kil was talking about when it comes to commercial grouper in NC. Without a doubt I was wishing I had tagged along when asked for 2 seasons in a row. Oh, well it was destiny to finally get to NC and fish together.
There was no lack of high end gear on board. I must say that the Jigging and Popping scene has come a long way in stateside and although I usually stick to my own trusty gear, I did have an eye on some other rods/reels/poppers/jigs/hooks/rings/gloves/belts and sunglasses.

Anyhow, enough ranting… onto the trip:

I realized that I had only 3 setups. I was super confident in my line systems and so I figured I only needed 3.

1. Spinal 150g – Capt. John’s Special edition. I have been receiving request per the performance of this tiny thin blank. I decided to pair it up with the VanStaal VM 150 back the fall and put it to the test for our second day of inshore jigging. I was thinking to target grouper (with throwback action) with cobia and snapper thrown in as some fish I could target with this rod. In fact I never thought the rod would be used for amberjack but needless to say Captain John had other thoughts. I think Travis has the rod rated at 18lbs max drag. We played around with about 13-14lbs drag. Enough for the above species but not for big jacks. The reel as I knew was astonishingly smooth and the drag got a serious workout on a fish that took a FISHERMAN Crazy Long Jig. (John, this was the blank you were asking about. I can send it to you if you like, April 1st is here already).

2. Blackhole 250g – I paired this guy with a Saragosa 10k. This setup was a last minute idea with a line system I really felt confident with. So, I was thinking big fish and tuna style fights since everyone said that AJ’s first run could be even stronger then a bluefin. I’m here to learn and this was my inaugural trip to the mecca so I had #60JB Hollow as the main and spliced #80 C16 for some end game confidence. Finally fingertraped #100 Jinkai mono for about 10-12 feet. I was ready and the Flexcoat was still drying as the rod spun on the dryer Thursday and Friday morning.
This rod gave me the jinx as It hooked the first AJ and the fish took a tempered run that dumped half the spool. I realized that my drag setting was light and I needed to crank up if I wanted to land the fish. As the fish ran and ran I started to smirk and feel that every fish in the sea had to try to be a tuna and put me to shame. There was no way I would lose the guy. At that second I felt a tug and pop and realized I hadn’t a fight to fight anymore as up came a leaderless end of Cortland C16. I didn’t even get to use my end game tactics but at least the chomp from a shark cut somewhere on my #80 segment. I quickly FG’d my way back into the game (while Olu tagged his first AJ which was nice and lively) and threw down a MG-Craft Skill jig 270g. This setup also caught a baby AJ and false albacore with a tuna jig: Nature Boys Swim Rider Short 175g.

3. Hots 56XH 420g - This was my no respect for Amberjack setup . I had just lost my favourite skill jig in my favourite colour. So I was going to muscle the next poor guy in. I slapped on a 400g Nagamasa that had been sitting in my jig back begging for action. I decided to teach the next fish a lesson. To all the guys on board that have jigged lead over 400g in over 300 feet of water I ask you to never be afraid to drop it down again after a hook-up-less drop or two. On the second drop I nailed a quality hookset and put the beans (beans in a can like the type eaten in Mexico waters) to the fish. I know the fish wasn’t smiling because I never let the fish run. From hookset to gaff the AJ was on his heels. I learned if you can control the head from the beginning, these fish will literally succumb to your exertion of short pumps and verbal taunts . This one had no chance. Thank you SOM Stella 8000swpg-16000 tuna gear.

If I could make a highlight of our boat time it would be that I could see and feel the satisfaction of other guys hooking up on fish. I love sitting back and watching my buddies work hard and fight through the art of enticing the bite. (Merv, I know you did a lot of this action)
The other highlight was meeting with Mikey at his restaurant and hearing him talk about how much he loves fishing, his restaurant, and largemouth bass and eventually eating his famous Coconut Cake! That was delicious (picture shown below). It was great to meet his partner, along with Frenchi’s family, Jimmy, and his buddy Andrew as well.
Ty thanks for letting me burn some clutch and feel the power of your turbocharged r-design. As much as that was I still wish I was riding the afterburners that Olu did that Friday evening. Haha…

I can't get over how nice the ride was. Captain John has a 2004 Contender 31' with dual Yamaha 4.2L V-6 300's. If I could own a offshore capable boat this one would be a dream.

In addition to the fishing and dinner at Terrazo's on Saturday night I wanted to upload some stickbaits that Merv created (designed & manufactured). They were sweet to say the least. Along with it were two carbon fiber poppers that Mikey introduced to me. I believe they are prototype and some amazing finish lead me to believe they are along the lines of the same kevlar weave material found in the Synit rods (Mikey owns the US distribution rights for that brand). Photos are top secret:

Finally the end result was some deliciously fresh Almaco Jack & Amberjack. The following is a photo of what Merv & I created. Cut to slivers and placed on a plate then drizzled with Ponzu and Soy sauces then seared with scorching hot olive oil! Chef Morimoto inspired!

I'm looking to get back to North Carolina as soon as possible to re-live the fun of jigging for these beasts. Also there is a world class American Red Snapper and Grouper fishing from these warm waters and the captain has extended an invite to come back and fish anytime.

At last I learned a bit about snacking down south as these pork rinds kept me away during the 9 hour drive!

Also, since this was the first real big fighting pelagic fish for our buddy Olu, I uploaded a video of him fighting. He did a great job.

Preparation for World Class Amberjack Jigging - North Carolina, United States of America 2011 - Part 1

I will target world class Amberjack from the waters of North Carolina soon.
As I prepare for the trip I read on the world record caught off the waters of Japan. There seems to be a challenge to target these marvelous fish from shallow waters.

In USA, the water is shallow off the East coast. Even 65 miles (100km) offshore shallow waters with drop offs provide depths of 300 feet deep. I understand the challenge and this will be a type of redemption for me as I had originally booked a trip out of Wilmington back in 2007 with Aki san. However, all plans for a trip were canceled because of the hurricane Helen at that time.

I will get my chance again.

Atlantic Star 12-30-10 - Seabass Jigging

A well know boat for well versed fisherman.
I really look forward to this 18 hour trip and its the highlight of my light game jigging.

As you read before, my setups were PE2/PE3 style. I brought 2 spinning setups and 2 conventional. Only 1 conventional was used.

The pick during the first drop was a slow bite. It did turn out that our boat wasn't optimizing the GPS location numbers as the captain originally thought. We tussled through a few spots within 1000 yards of each other.
I started with a "thunder" jig aka madai or lucanus style. I had a big tug on the 2nd drop but eventually dropped the fish after about 15 feet or so. I ended up dropping fish on all jigs.
The funnest drop came to the last 2 spots. It was almost like every drop = 1 jumbo seabass. I didn't measure my kills but I suspect the largest was 25-28 inches long. Upwards to 5lbs.
My buddy joined me as we were the only other crazies that want to fish for these amazingly tasteful fish before their legal season closes.

Best Jig: Shimano Bottom Ship 200g (Silver body + Pink Octopus skirt), hands down until I lost it to a mysterious fish that only bites the braid on my line system. :( I need to make another order.

I ended up with 25 fish, which is the legal limit per person per day.

Took some time today to make an eel bucket. As some of you know if you store the eels in your bucket over a longer period of time they will drown themselves in their own slime. Either that or they will poison each other with they excess er... stuff from their bodies.

Anyhow, enter my red buckets. Take two buckets and perform the drilling to one of them. The one that has the holes is the top bucket and the regular one is the bottom one. This drains the slime from the eels so they will live happily a little longer. This is the stack design.

Here is a quick 10 step guide to creating a lure/plug storage crate to go in your vehicle or to stack in your fishing den. Keeps the plugs organized and has enough room for sizes up to 10" long. This is the simplified version.

Project: Love your plugs

Items Used:

Schedule 40 PVC Pipe, length: 5ft x 2inch diameter (quantity 4)

Start: Day 1

1. "OBTAIN" a Milk Crate

2. Decide on your pipe! Enter the 2 inch "Schedule 40"

3. Choose your weapon: Hacksaw 12"

4. Measure up! I'm at 10", ten...ten that is...

5. After marking up, time to grease your elbow!

6. Chopped up portions, ready to go! 24 Counted for!

7. Carefull attention to detail as I sand down the edges 120 grit!

8. VOILA! Enter final stage of Milkcrate design.

9. With the addition of plugs, the only step left cable ties.

10. FINISHED!

This particular gem is the mainstay of my arsenal for light freshwater snakehead fishing.

It's been a while since the manufacturer made a reel of this quality but in it's day this was the prime reel for casting topwaters for biggun Largemouth Bass.

I've put a few years into this one and say It's my favourite reel for throwing smaller lures.
Originally the sideplates were gunmetal but I decided to change them up for an original deadstock burgundy colour. This particular reel was made in June of 1976, Sweden.

Enjoy. This pair with my XMG lamiglass is my goto for snakies. Ultralight setup!

Studio Ocean Mark Drag System Rebuild - Better than Shimano Stella drag system

Studio Ocean Mark has an interesting drag system. There might be an advantage for single stack drag performance over the original stock Shimano drag system.

Anyhow, I have taken the time to clean and re-lube the spool and its clicker system.
I found that the spool indeed does have some impressive re-engineering to it. Also there exist 2 ball bearings in the drag stack. One is in the bottom of the stack (fit into the body of the spool) and the other sits atop a metal drag washer that is milled out to reduce weight and functions as a stabilizer so the spool and drag spin smoothly in-line on the reel's main shaft.

Lube: Cal's Drag Grease (metal and carbon weaved drag washers) and Reel-X (bearings).

Here is the drag stack layout. Studio Ocean Mark uses Carbon fiber weave drag washers. The weaves are small and tight. The fiber washers and stack comes un-lubed.

Notice there is another metal (thinner than the rest) drag washer still in the spool bottom. I didn't discover it was still stuck down there until later. Anyhow, notice the bearing on the left and an embedded bearing on the third washer from the right.
The last "washer" is metal with a rubber ring sandwiched between a top and bottom layout. This is another way to waterproof the drag stack. Nice to have since there is already a rubber ring on the drag knob.

A close up of the 2nd bearing located 3rd "washer" from the top of the stack. Notice the embedded bearing as I have flipped the washer upside down and it reveals the milled out metal washer with the bearing in it.
Very nice design.

On to the 2nd half of the drag stack system of Studio Ocean Mark. There is 3 phillips head screws that mount the aluminum heat dispenser ring that is in contact with the spools main body.

Taken apart and cleaned, this is a nice piece of hardware I've never seen before on a fishing reel. Kind of reminds me of the metal piece on a northbridge chip located on your computers motherboard. Made to attach to the main source of heat. Made to dispense heat through the bottom of the spool.
Original, and genius.

Located in the bottom stack is another metal washer and a hidden drag clicker. This system reminds me of the Shimano Stella FA system or the Daiwa Dogfight clicker.

Notice the milled section of the spool where the "Northbridge" ring attaches to. There is gap and metal contact to take the heat away from the spool.

The underside of the northbridge ring is shown to have the ridged clicker system. This piece is quite well made.

Anyhow, remember how I noted earlier that I missed that last (thinner) metal washer in the bottom of the stack? here it is on as the 1st washer from the left of the stack.

Northbridge ring back in place, screws with (red) locktite back in, and the spool is ready to go.

Presto! Clean, lubed, and back to action!

I decided to rename this reel my: OZ-Fighter - Power Gear (PG) 8000

Finally I got this handle as a gift and it is superbly made. I can tell from the craftsmanship, it was totally worth the yen it commands.

I decided to order from Saltywater Tackle in Brooklyn, New York. They had the item in stock and I wanted to support the friendly guys there. Paul and Sami have always been stand up guys and I know they are experienced fisherman and know their gear.

This was a perfect match for my DT colour spool. The scheme works out beautifully. Actually I am missing the cap and I already know where that will be coming from.

I also got the chance to pick up a 230gram FCL Labo jig in pink. This jig was famed for many years now as the creator is a angler from Japan that has a great storyline. He will come from Japan in a few weeks and I will hopefully get a chance to fish at his side. FCL Labo jigs are famous in USA.

The Varivas grey PE knot cord is 200lb rating at around 10 feet. Just enough for "on-trip" emergencies. I have a few 13/0 sized Jigging Master hooks made already. I didn't give up on them already. Hot's split ring and FCL labo jigs come from Kilsong's Jigging World and the SOM handle and Varivas PR knot comes via Saltywater Tackle. Cheers.

350 gram Cape Cod Special Custom Colors - Choosing Colors

It's a difficult decision to get the right colors down when you are searching for a custom design but I have found something so beautiful that might make me decide to go for a custom rod eventually when I get the motivation. ;)

Here is a rod I found recently on a trip and loved the theme. I can't imagine how much time goes into this type of wrap work but I'm glad there are artist out there that will and have the ability to do this.

It was a delight and new challenge for me to get on Cod with this crew yesterday.
Kilsong, thank you for the very nice trip out on Eastmans. Everyone was fun and informative on my first time out pulling on these fish.
I'm not shy to say that after this marathon trip, jigging for cod will be on my list in the future. I think I probably had more fun straining my back than anyone else!

It was a perfect day for any kind of fishing on the east coast. We happened to arrive to Eastmans around 3:45am and to our surprise there were a good number of vehicles already in the lot waiting to load the boat with gear. We took a short name as the journey for me was at least 6 hours. The area around Eastmans is kind of a resort area and actually a very nice place to meet friends and enjoy the water. More on that later...

So it was my conscious effort to NOT bring more than 1 rod and 1 backpack of gear. I know from experience it's not about the amount of gear your packing but the preparation you have for the trip in need-only items. I heard there was mackerel inshore so I packed my Saltiga rod and Saltist reel specifically for the mack. 2 rods was enough for me.

As the morning started it really felt like there was a constant pick of fish from each stop we made. We tried to anchor initially but then mixed up the time with some good drifts. It was beautiful weather and some minimal wind to start the morning with a pick up in wind later on in the day (6-8/8-10).

I picked up my Lav jigs in a variety of sizes along with a viking for insurance of a good bite. Im happy to see such a simple jig can produce. I guess the day was right for my gear as I know one jig and technique will work one day and may not work the next. Anyhow, I rigged up with 16oz of lead and red tube/ pink squid setup. Had a blue squid teaser with grape color 6" worm as the stinger hook. I used this rig primarily through the day.
Eventually in the afternoon I switched to Squiding style with a 10oz Crippled Herring in Mackerel color and had success with 1 cod and 1 nice sized haddock.
Anyhow, I was pleased to see that my choice of rod was among the choice for the sharpies on the boat. That goes to prove the helpfulness of guys on here to share useful info on what works and best usage. The combo of Jigging Master PE5 and St. Croix XXXHF worked perfect all day.
I jigged up cod, haddock, and Pollock, and ling/cusk all on the same setup. The mates enjoyed filleting up my catch as well. (wow, such enthusiasm).

A day of good laughs with fellow anglers and the challenge to pull on some big fish was enough for me.
Nice to finally meet some good anglers from 360 tuna and other boards across the fishing community. Angelo and Ralph did an amazing job on packing the cooler as did most everyone on the boat. Sam did an amazing job staying on the fish all day and ended the trip with the pool winner that was hooked up right next to me after I pounded my way to my PB cod.
Kil really showed up with helping me learn the technique for jigging and squiding as I stuck by him at the rail pretty much all day.
Willy got on some nice fish, I think he got one additional fish that I didn't for a grand slam! Thanks for helping with the driving too.

I will recommend this one to anyone looking for a quality bucktail. Tidaltails.com is a way to order but it seems like their prices are inflated.

Up close you can see that this one is bullet head and sinks quick along with having a steady vertical motion.

So far I landed stripers and a fluke on em with the 3/4 ounce version. This is their smallest.

Nothing special with the paint or eye, I believe they have glow version as well.
These ones have Gamakatsu instead of Owner. I prefer the Gammy but they are available in both.

Cape May Tackle - Fluke Jigheads (Spro Style)

Manufactured in Asia, packaged and label by the designers at Cape May Tackle. Here is the homegrown jig that I got to pick up locally at B&T shop before sushi dinner the other night. :)

I'd like to wonder where the skirts are that I can attach to them. I figure they designed it to be customizable. I picked up the 3 & 5 ounce for bottom jigging on drifts for fluke fish.

Some fellow bloggers have asked me to support east coast tackle so here is my plug x__x

They look and feel like Spro jigs. The finish is great, however I didn't get any glow out of them. I just assumed they were glow versions but I was mistaken. From what I've heard they swim nose up, rather then fully horizontal like the Spros.

Overall nice finish, and seemingly strong OWNER hook (perhaps I would prefer Gammy...but...)
One mishap that appeared after carefull examination is that one of the eye's on the 5oz. jig was glued on outside where it should be. Oh, well, it's tight on there. Nice looking product. I will test it out soon on my cod trip.

This one is a size 1. Some very very sharp and dangerous hooks for freshwater.

I was able to test them today on Greenlane LMB. Fish up to 19" could not damage them, yet alone bend them. Highly recommended. These hooks are 2X strong.

Eastmans Cod Trip - Gearing up with Lav Jig & Squid Teasers

I have a cod trip out of Eastmans Port, New Hampshire.

Here is the gear I have prepared for the 12 hour marathon. I was invited into the trip by Kilsong (whom I've seem to be fishing alot with lately).

Greenlane Reservoir 5.22 - PUT ON AIRS

I'm putting the time in on Greenlane this year. Although I know there are bigger/better bodies of water for LMB trophies, I like the reservoir.

Anyhow, with the weather today I knew it would be a fun time out. So I went. As I arrived there were 3 cars ahead of me that were stacked with fellows. 2 pulled up behind me and we were all waiting for the office lady to come open the gate and let us crazies in.

Aki, I found a new way to the row boat launch. I left at 5:17am, arrived at 6:02am.

Anyhow, I was the second on the water and here is my crazy picture report. I know they aren't HUGE like we are used to but nonetheless. Greenlane bass.

Oh yea, so for some reason they all hit that Japanese Hooker dual prop. That thing is fantastic and I upgraded the hooks to owners. Very sharp and strong as a bull.

So, I went 50% today. 6 hits, 3 in the boat. I missed a bigger bass from multiple headshakes under the boat. I was watching him too much to be serious.

Overall, it was a fun trip with cloudy weather (the best!). Topwater doesn't get funner then this! Missing hits, snagging tree limbs, eating lunch on the boat! :D 2 thumbs UP!

Greenlane Reservoir 5.13 - Early Topwater Action

Beautiful weather with morning fog. We arrived before 6am and waited for the friendly women to arrive and open the gate. $5 per hour for a jon boat is a great deal.
Greenlane is one of my favorite large mouth bass fisheries. They have some great water with small rental row/electric motor boats available. I never been on the water with so much fog, it literally covered the lake like a thick coating. Visibility was about 30 feet. The fog burned off as the sun rose.

I brought a friend that has been asking me to go fishing for a very long time. Very enjoyable, here are the pictures from last week. My goal of putting a friend on fish was successful as they hooked into a 18.5" bass with the Thumb lure from Japan. Awesome!

On Board the Peconic II - Fluke Opening day on Long Island, NY with Kilsong & Willy

I got a quick call Friday morning to get on some of these beautiful fish out of Peconic area near exit 60 on Long Island. It was my first time out on the party boat fishing for fluke but I heard they have generally trophy sized fluke caught in that area and there is consistent good fishing on opening day.

I grabbed my rod and reel and headed off to meet Willy at his place and then Kilsong at the shop. Quick drive as we decided to meet at 3am. Without realizing, I forgot to pack the right Spro jigheads for this type of boat fluking. Great! But Kil was able to recommend and share his "Kil'R'Rig" Special setups. (I think all his setups bear this name now).

Anyhow, met up with Kil around 3:30am and headed off on the long island expressway.

I just want to note that I had a good luck charm while driving. I hit a rabbit with my rear drivers seat tire as it sprinted out in front of us somewhere on highway 25. more on that later...

Anyhow, we arrive at the marina and there are a few good cars lined up already (4:45am) and Im thinking we have been beat to our spots on the party boat. Nevertheless, we get board the Peconic II and realize we are the first people there. We quickly save our spots with our rods in the rod holders and beer on deck. The cars parked were actually waiting for the ferry to go over to Rhode Island and not to fish :)

After grabbing ICE and a few drinks/snacks we head back to the boat and will wait and watch around 50 anglers fill the boat. We depart to go a few hundred yards with 70 other boats on the water at 8:00am for the chance at monster fluke.

Kil forgot his g.loomis rod so emplored the power of the Jigging Master Power Spell 100 gram rod and Daiwa Saltiga 15 reel. (I still can't believe to this day I sold mine, what a perfect little reel for inshore fish). For Willy and I to watch Kil jig brought our spirits up as he landed 10 or so before we got ours. Anyhow, 1 UP for JM100 rod.

Finally on one drift I asked if I can use that Jigging Master. Kil said yes and I finally got on a fluke around 20 inches. It was a true delight, as I realized it was nothing to do with skill but it was the setup that caught the fish for me. haha :D Kil mentioned that that rod along with the JM PE4 reel caught 60lb Amberjack in North Carolina last year. Go figure! The rod had the mojo still on it! haha

After hearing the mate speak of the biggest fluke he has ever seen at 18lbs I feel that I will make this an annual trip to get out there for these great fish!! I hear the claim that the 18lber was caught 100 yards from the shoreline. It topped out at 36 inches and was 6.5 inches thick! He said fluke top out at around 36 inches and a typical 10lb fluke is around 32 inches.

Kil & Willy, to say I enjoyed the day is an understatement. It was seriously a non-stop laughing day with missed hooksets, sea robins , and spidercrabs. Along with some good laughs and me hitting the poor rabbit that darted in front of the car we saw some nice fluke.

The Poconic was a great PB. The mates were polite and helpful as they should be. And since it was my first time fishing there, I couldn't get over how nice a body of water it was. Also with 70 boats next to us. Kinda like parking lot fishing.

The fun didn't stop there. After we came got back to NJ, we went to a Korean restaurant as Willy and I wanted to try Kil's suggestion of Samgetang ( whole small chicken stew),
We ordered three Samgetang and one Tofu dish. It all cost only $45.
We spent three hours there while eating and drinking Korean wine called Soju. Of course our main subject of our talking was how to improve our tackles.

Although I caught the only keeper for the day, it was a great time on the water fishing, laughing, and telling jokes about each other. I will glady do it again.

Next Destination is Quincy Bay, MA.
We start fishing before dawn for striped bass with live eel and go for big winter flounder in the bay. After we get limit of huge flounder, we go out to Stellwagen Bank for cod/pollock jigging!

Shimano OCEA Bluefin Tuna LTD 2009 Stickbait 150mm/70g

Just wanted to share this particular plug since some of you have been asking about it through email and such.

This is probably one of the nicest Shimano stickbaits made. Last year's Limited model. I think they purposely name it LTD to market the plug like it's a novelty. Oh well. Thanks to my buddy again!

Bluefin Jigging at its finest - Cape Cod 2007

I let the pictures tell the report.
we had 10 hookups with bluefin in 180 lbs - 200 lbs out of Cape Cod on Aug 20.
Three of us had hookups with 200 llbs range tuna at the same time.

The average size of tuna we fought. This is the only tuna we kept and all others were released.

Dante used Jigging Master custom 500g rod and Saragosa 18000F willed with 80 lbs braided line. Saragosa got frozen after cauht two bluefin and he switched to Accurate SR30. He landed a 200 lbs Blue Fin Tuna with combo of JM 500g rod and Accurate SR30 in 25 mimutes. I know many West Coast fishermen are skeptical of using spinning gear and thinner jigging rods for big tuna, but it is time they try themselves to believe.

Enoch used Smith jigging rod and Stella 20000SW first and fought two tuna, but both pulled hooks. Later on he fought a 200 plus lbs bluefin with my Hots One Pitch Slider 56XH and he was actually shocked the light and thin 9 oz rod handled the big tuna beautifully. He landed the fish with the rod in 25 minutes.

The beauty of bluefin fishing here is you don't have to travel far.
It is only 10 - 12 miles off the beach.

I got to finally meet some names on 360tuna. It was great to meet you all and get some face time with others. Bret, I didnt get a picture your your father Tony but it was also great to meet him and Michael.

Meeting True World Tackle

I had a chance to meet with a few good dealers and distributors at the Oaks Sports show.
Funny to say but I felt like the local show really showed some good charateristics of where Jigging and Popping is going. I met with few friends and industry guys.

One of the Jigging and Popping tackle shops that made it down was True World Tackle. Owner is Akira and his head tackle guy is Jason aka Geyssonh from Republic Dominicana. We hit it off right away as Geyssonh is a true surf junkie from the northern Jersey coast.

Anyhow, the funny way we met was when I was meandering in the exhibit rod racks I had a feeling that someone was looking at me and I looked up to see Geyssonh waving and saying hi! I walked over and he mentioned that he recognied me and asked if I was Enoch. After a quick intro and laugh we talked tackle. Great guy and friendly convo lead me to feel like he and Akira were great guys.
I happened to meet another gentleman that tapped me on the shoulder while I was in the True World Tackle exhibit. His name was Jeese from Philadelphia Anglers Club. What a great feeling to be known in this fishing industry. I guess all the blog and youtube videos gave me some public image. :)

I took some pictures. They had a great assortment of Volandors. That is one of my favorite swimbaits.

Tackle Now Figure 8 Solid Rings

For a good time I decided to visit Dan Harley and the crew at Cape May Tackle for some good convo and to check out their products. They recently imported what seems to be a quality ball bearing and figure 8 solid ring.

(PICTURE 1)The rating for the #7 bearing swivel is #260 and figure 8 is #240 (pounds)
The comparable swivels in exhibit #1 is Sampo #300, then the #7 Tackle Now, followed by the #6 Tackle Now rated to #220.

(PICTURE2) This is a comparison with the Jigging Master Figure 8 Solid ring (left). That ring is rated #350lbs and is the Medium size. the Tackle Now version (right) is Large size. I forget the rating.
