With the winds dying down the ocean was really laid calm for one of the last blackfish boat trips. We arrived at dock at 5:30am and were greeted by about 4 others including regulars of the Mimi VI out of Point Pleasant, NJ.
Without a doubt it was going to be cold but that is when Blackfishing on the boats in NJ are the best. This time of year means big fish off the inshore wrecks and pillige grounds.
While off in holiday mode this past week or so had me thinking about fishing perhaps every day. I received an email a few days back from David aka Esquired. It came to be that him and Jimmy aka jl_rotary grabbed a spot on the charter along with an extra for me. I accepted with grattitude and without hesitation.
I really felt that south jersey and deleware have some of the best habitat for big tog but at least we had some ground to cover up in "north jersey".
Although the weather was nice, the fish decided to have lockjaw. I was lucky to get 4 keepers along with David's 2 and poor Jimmy had a skunk. Nevertheless, some bigger fish were caught on the boat but I guess for us three they are waiting for us to get down to the Deleware waters as that is the best big togging around this time of year.
Just to mention how seriously cold it was on the water it was like 14 degrees F when we got to the boat. It was a warm 35 degrees F for the peak when this picture was taken. Our crabs froze to death...but the blackfish still loved it! You can see on my face how cold I was.
Check out the bucket of cold death:
As the 2009 year wrapped up we were off for one more boat trip out before fullfilling our obligations for family and friend. Although it wasnt a trip to pillage the blackfishing grounds we were all happy to get out there. I'm happy to get on the water with another DF member and eat some great sandwiches David made. I hope to see yall on the water or at least hook many more fish with you guys again in 2010.
If you never fished for tog, make it a trip for this January. I will gladly join!

BlackHole Cape Cod Special - Unbreakable Jigging rod 250gram
Tried to break one of these new "carbon technology" rods.
I couldn't break, although if my life depended on it, I think probably I'd be successfull. :)
Anyhow, I'm thinking of buying this particular rod in conventional style to test for Amberjack.
Brand: Black Hole
Model: Cape Cod Special 250g
Made in Korea

Cancelled Plans for Striped Bass trip! Thumbs down!

I was about to go foul weather gear bass fishing but got the call that roads were being closed, so I guess its just pasta for dinner 2nite.

Shoutout to Brewst & Sometimes Can Anglers!!!
Special T-shirt shout out! To my friends over in Malaysia.
Thank you for keeping it real and posting some of the nicest reports from Asia. I wish someday to fish with you all.
Let me give you some background. Sometimes Anglers ring leader Bruce and I have been sharing stories and advice on tackle/gear for about half a year. After following him on his blogspot he start posting some really nice t-shirt designs he had made for his crew of anglers.
I believe in his group of guys knowing that we all have the addiction around the world.
Their post are great, fish are "exotic" and have landed some huggggge catches! (talking about GT and BIG BIG Yellowfin tuna!)
Shoutout to the crew of Sometimes Can Anglers! Thank you for the tee :)
The outing was at Barnaget Light during the fall Striper run. I hit my Personal Best striped bass at 38 inches. approx 96.5cm!
Skinny fish but it ended up being cooked for a weekend getaway at the Poconos.
Caught on the outgoing tide around 9:45pm.
Rod: Shimano Tiralejo 8'MH Long Cast guide version
Reel: Daiwa Saltist 4500H
Line: #30lb Suffix
Leader: #50 Ande Mono
Lure: 9' Black Wooden Gibbs Needlefish/Eel
One love!

1st Tautog trip! Atlantic Star, Wildwood NJ - November 21st, 2009
I was on the tog charter out of wildwood saturday November 21st, 2009.
It was a great time even though toggies were not hugemongus. I did end up with 23 hook ups, 11 keepers, and 2 pool winner.
It was a pleasure to fish with guy's like tan and his friend john and andy. (picture?)
Although the group didn't feel like it was an amazing trip, I felt that everyone still had fun on the "first" outing of the year.
I also met the regulars and one in particular was a older gentleman named Brad. He was from PA and was a regular for many years. We had some great conversation and I learned that he has done many trips for all sorts of fish like cod, tilefish, tog, seabass, etc. He was actually on the same charter that the NY state record golden tilefish (59lbs) was taken. The man who took it dropped his jig next to him to catch the biggun.
Brad also showed me the famous green flash teaser made from Mike of Peace Token up in Jamaica, NY. That is the one that took many huge tile and the record.
Brad was nice enough to take this picture:
One more thing, Brad actually asked me if I was on BassBarn and I said yes. He mentioned that he recognized me on the board and knew my name. He also mentioned that I was friends with Kilsong and fished with him. The internet certainly brings the world to a smaller playing field. I'm really glad to have fished with this guy.
I am in continual pursuit of the best tackle and rigging style. Here is the reel I used (blue).
Here are the hooks I used. I ended up straightening one hook. So I switched them out. I didn't lose any tackle/hooks/sinkers on this trip. Yes, I'm using crimps. I decided to try it since I had them for my tuna gear. They worked well, never slipped. My line setup was 80# Yozuri Fluorocarbon from leader to snafu. Connection knot was FG from braid to leader and the braid was #50lb Jerry Brown.
I also offered my 2/0 hooks to Tan and Johnq. john declined but tan took 2. I hope he tried them and can give some feedback sometime.
The damaged hook was from the fish before my biggest of the day. About 5 and a half pounds.
Finally, man does not live on bread alone:
But on the word of God:

Hot's One Pitch Slider - A New Member of the Family !!
Unleash power into your jigging game!
Welcome the newest weapon in my arsenal.
The Hot's One Pitch Slider of Japan. This rod has a beautiful parabolic bend right through the handle. Also known as:
S0S-56XH
5 foot 6 inches of pure lifting power.
1UP to this rod for battling my first bluefin tuna out of Cape Cod last Thursday. This rod beat the 70" beast in less than 15 minutes!
- Longer, Stronger, and Lighter then any rod in its class range. This rod is described by owner, Minami, of Hot's as the new power for big bluefin tuna in the NE of United States.
- This rod is lighter then my fluke rod. Kilsong mentioned it was weighted at under 9 ounces!
- Notice the spiral line wrap up from the neck section to the tip. Atteniton to detail much like my Smith wgj-56h.
Jig weight at 420g
Line rated: PE-6 to PE-10 (1UP)
This rod seriously feels like a 500g rod. I really enjoyed the length of the butt section making the actual exposed rod section shorter and putting the Stella and her handle knob at the right length for my arms.
A more adequate rod for big bluefin tuna then the predecessor hero Wei World 48xxh & 52xh (for kingfish). The new 2009 Magalog places these two rods on the same fold and indicating the heroics of each design. Certain attention is put onto this rod as to its extended length setting a higher tier for its expectations & performance.
